Watching the youtube alone before i post this make me a bit sebak. Coz it remind me my legs condition when i ran my first marathon in KLIM05.

I agreed that marathon start at 30km. Itu yang betul-betul menguji ketahanan mental. And is a mental race, some people even say that it's 90% mental another 10% is physical effort

Report Great Eastern 20km 2008

It was a last minute decision. I received a call from Mr Teoh the SP Runners chairman said 2 bib# available, 2 days before the event. 1 bib# for 20k F category and 30k for veteran category. Looking my weekly mileage not event reach 20k in total.. So I took 20k bib under Mr.X

Went to KL @9pm/saturday on chartered bus by my running club and Alor Star Jogging Club (ASJC) and pick another 3 kakis from BM Leopard club at Sungai Dua. We did not book any hotel so we spend a night on moving bus and continue running once reach Tasek Perdana, on next morning.

Stop at Sg Buloh R&R Plus-Highway for refreshment and light breakfast. Luckily got 1 shop still open at 4am. Before reach Tasek Perdana, we pick another runner.. Mr. Loke who helped us took our bib# and goodies bags - TQVM!.

@Tasek Perdana.
So far i did not doing any long distance run since my Powerman on last November. My left leg still giving a bit pain. I could only ran 2-3 times per week in selow pace. And times each time i doing training ran, i had to jump into pool on next day. Kind of therapy and swimming training too. After that my leg fresh (sikit) again.

I don't know what cause pain on my left leg. It was already 3 months, 2 running shoes changed and only able jogging in short distance.

That morning before flag-off, i meet-up some KL runners such as PM chief who seeking "pot" to settle his business :P then i chat with Kenny Tan, Zulazlan and Jamie. Seem this my first time on GE20km and i not familiar with the route. Jamie helps me describe the hilly route until up to Hartamas.

I had read some nightmare stories from runners blog telling the deadly route up to Hartamas and i never been there by car or what so ever. So.. abit kecut perut heard about it. Bola2api said kalau jumpa Petronas gas station sudah gumbira tak terkata.

Flag-off the GE20km at 6:30am, i could said the runners were 4 times less than GE30k. More runners suka 30km.

Still dark and we start running and climbing on steep route leaving Tasek Perdana. I'm not familiar with route, i just keep on running and struggling to stabilize my breath while climbing. Hop-hap-hop-hap. A sign that i running occasionally.

It was very hilly route. Running liked roller-coster. Up-down-up-down- flat -Up-down-up-down. Until half of route, as usual Tey was waiting to capture runner’s reaction while climbing up to Hartamas.

I was ran slow with small steps climbing and seeking the Petronas gas station. And indeed once saw it; wish i bring some cash for 100Plus. I thought it was a U-turn @gas station, the 10km mark was away behind about half kilo but we still running ahead.

After collected hand-band i ran abit faster (turun bukit) :) I selisih and cerekah to Ronnie, Aiman, Abu, Nezz, Haza, Bacin, Jaja, Jamil, mahadhir, some running friends.

I'm really suffered after run down from Hartamas. Legs want to walk but i said no . I doing habih selow punya run. Kaki pon dah tak larat angkat. Just keep on running and i ignore my running distance and also didn't looking at my stopwatch. Just slow running jogging.

Passing Dataran Merdeka.. - Tasik Perdana is not far. My mind was empty except a 400m sign that keep on flashing.

I completed my first 2008 run race in 38th by 1:54.42 - Not a gun time but taken while i crossing start & finish line. It was my 4th worst timing since start belajar berlari in half marathon. I don't mind because i'm enjoy running.

I saw.. fat, cholesterol and tummy

Photos of running friends while i'm kedarah tau-fu-fah and sandwich

shoutmix.com

When i setup this blog, i was sought a tag board for me and visitors to post comments. Kind of message board or a shout-box (google it for more detail) and i found shoutmix.com. Until now I'm still comfortable using shoutmix.com (free) services compare to other tag boards.

Easier for customization and fit into my blog environment.

Until yesterday, baru aku tau rupanya shoutmix.com is local provider. The founder named Joel Neoh who won a grand prize "Youth Development Entrepreneur" at 1st National Youth Entrepreneur Convention 2008 with RM20k + laptop.

He developed the web application alone by himself. It has become popular and powered by two dedicated servers.

So congratulation to Joel Neoh and keep the free shoutmix box running ya! :-)

Report Great Eastern Pacesetters 30km 2008

By: Aiman Cheah Tiong Chap

This is the third attempt to run the race below 3 hours but alas I had to do some walking to complete the race. I thought I had the best preparation compared to the past two editions but I was not feeling well during the last few days before the event.

Two weeks before that I was very confident and was doing reasonably well. I managed to do 16.8km in 1 hour 31 mins, 16.8km in 1 hour 25 mins and 12.6km in 1 hour 09 mins on the 6th, 8th and 11th Jan respectively.

Actually this ‘training’ is two in one, hoping to do below 3 hours for the 30km and below 1 hour 15 mins for the Press Run in Kuching the following week. Once I got the news that the Press Run is postponed, my motivation is somehow affected. I had another 3 sessions of ‘training’ at much slower pace because I had “wind” in my upper abdomen and it was troubling me.

Anyway, I managed to run 16.8km in 1 hour 35 mins, 18.9km in 2 hours and 6.3 km in 44 mins on 14th, 16th and 18th Jan respectively. The last run had indicated how I would fare in the race.

Race Day
Got a morning call from Kevin Chow, PM32 at 4 a.m. The most reliable person to wake me up since I longer drive my students to races. Normally they are the ones who help to wake me up. Well, if I am late, they will be late too – as simple as that.

Reached the starting line about 10 minutes before the race started. Did some stretching and as always, started from the last line as I won’t be competing against other runners but against myself. Felt comfortable with breathing because it was at a snail’s pace in the beginning.

Once out of the Lake Garden, I stepped up the pace but I guess I was doing around 6 mins per km. My ‘ideal’ pace to crack the 3 hours barrier. Managed to get ahead of Kevin Chow and Ryan Teoh, PM17 along the way. I had a pleasant surprise when someone called me near Jalan Duta. Guess who? It was my host for this report. Sorry, Haris, mata sudah pinar dan tercungap-cungap to recognize anyone!

Actually, I was still comfortable when going up hill until the last 10km. My thigh muscles were giving me signals and I had done 2 hours 7 mins. No way to do a sub 3 hours! My intention then was just to complete within the qualifying time. I was overtaken by Kevin and Ryan at Sri Hartamas. Began to stop and massage my thigh muscles and jogged. Concerned runners asked if I was okay while some gave a cynical smile which is usual.

I was glad to see the sign ‘4km to go’ because my watch showed 3hrs 03 mins. I knew I would make it. Stopped and had endurance drink at the water station and it was jogging and stopping for massaging all the way. I had done 3 hours and 19 mins with one km to go.

Suddenly I remembered that I did not start my stop watch at the same time when the horn was blown. Quickly stepped up my pace and ‘sprinted’ home with 50 metres to go. Already teruk also could still overtook three runners. My timing was 3 hours 23 minutes 58 sec and I received the finishing card – 402. Still better than my 3 hours 28mins 06 secs in 2006. However, I found the quality of runners have improved tremendously. In 2006 my overall position was 295.

After the race
Though I may not have achieved my 3 hours target, I did not suffer so much after the race. In the past I could only managed 3 times of 10.5km race a week before the race. The legs felt sore for two or three days. This time around, I could climb the stairs without much pain and the sore was gone by Tuesday.

I will certainly be back again next year. This 30km race is special for me because it is the longest race that I have ever participated in. Still dreaming of my first marathon.

B572, Aiman still managed to overtook a few meter to Great Eastern Pacesetters 30km 2008 finish line.

Asap

While walking back to bus from Tasik Perdana after completed my GE20km, i meet up 2 running friends who are my blog visitors, at different location. The first one named Shah. He said he is blog stalker. Heheeee.. and the other one is Hazman, I getting knowing him via email before meet-up at GE30km.

We managed exchange info about each others, tanya khabar, kampung, year of running, training places and etc. Coincidently Hazman's kampung is in Semeling, my usual running route passing his kampung house.

But one thing that i felt i related with them that we are smoke survival. Both of them stop smoking for years. They tried everything to quit before but not succeed. Until they found... jogging/running. New physical activities that make them forgot about cigar

An activity that make them tarik hand-brake terus.

No kesian-kesian - Esok 3 batang, lusa 2 batang, tulat sebatang, tungging.. tertungging lar.

Just tarik hand-brake! - Same thing happen to me.

I know a lot of running friends who are smoke survival. A harcore who smoke 2 packs of 20. Kira penghisap tegar like Najib, now he ran 10km in <40mins. He left the habit >10years. Azwar.. now he is Powerbar: Team Elite Of The Year and some of my running friends in SP.

But i also got kawan yang hisap before and after run race/training.. for years - but tak kemana pon.

It's depand how bad you want to - health or hell.

Blog update

Right now I'm in the midst of updating my blog. I was thinking to put a new template/skin on it, change the color, add a new sidebar on the left and add new section. I was also thinking to upgrade my blog template to new version, which the blogger.com said more easily to customize the blog apperance.

But after spend more than 1 ½ day learn on my test blog, I found hard to understand the upgrade blog template concept. I'm still unable to create new section on side-bar. Very confuse, so I decide to stick to old version for this blog.

Some of items here, i had to rearrange such as..

Google Search
Using Google Seach by checking on my blog url radio-button, it will list all the articles/posts contain the keyword. So for me, the search engine should put on the top the blog - kind of "table of contents".

Same goes to feedburner, you could subscribed my posts into your own reader such as google, yahoo, pageflake or directly posted into your mailbox. I did some changes on RSS post. Those subcribers earlier knows the changes :)

Forms and Events section.
I just changed the month color font into orange - looks abit catchy.

For IE browser users,
I know my sidebar "drop" until the last post. Which mean you need to scroll-down below to download the event form. This because of browser incompatibility. My template coding works fine on FireFox. Seem that i'm Firefoxian so i just ignore it.

But after checking on visitors’ statistic, i found more that 60% visitor using IE. I should jump into their shoes too. And the root cause was table width.

Monetize
If it could generate some $$, why not. There people who are making more RM20k/month! from the net. If me... mau tunggu lagi ka?.. lari + bike + swim larrr. I include blog monetization as one of 2008 targets. Probably i will create another website talking about different topic, out of sport issue. Already have an idea and I need to work it out.

Just for the love of the sport

Imagine you're lining up in a local 10km race and a couple of athletes to your right stands one of the finest middle distance runners in history! And imagine your surprise, when, after about 7 km, you see that same vest coming back towards you as you catch up to him, pass him and then beat him to the line in a 10km race! OK, you probably, in your moment of reality check, should realise that he's not racing you and is out for a fun run, but, hey, at least you'd be able to tell someone that you beat the great Hicham el Guerrouj in a 10km race!

That's what happened this past weekend in Nice, France, where the great Moroccan ran perhaps his first race since retiring from the sport after his double gold in Athens in 2004. According to reports, el Guerrouj took to the start line with about 4500 runners, stayed with the leaders for a short while, but then dropped back, giving plenty of runners a chance to pass a world record holder, Olympic champion and a man who has run 12:50 for 5km!

el Guerrouj, for his part, seems to be enjoying the fun run approach, saying "People were overtaking me and I could see they were pleased, surprised. I could hear some of them say "well, I can say I have beaten Hicham at least once!".

Report: Penang Starwalk 2007

By Aiman Cheah Tiong Chap
Date 16 December 2007

I was fortunate because I have a good two weeks for preparation. On 13th Dec I was able to run 10.5km in 53mins and on 14th Dec I managed to walk 10.5km in 1hr 04mins. I must also thank Abdul Haris Shariff for his indirect encouragement in the preparation for the race.

Luck was on my side on race day. I managed to be at the fifth row. Yu Song was two rows in front. When the gun went off, most of the competitors started off with such a furious pace. That was a good sign because it left some space for me to make my move.

I knew I had a good pace because I caught up with Mr. Aplaidoo after 6 minutes. I went a bit too fast as I could not catch my breath when pressuring a Singaporean walker at the 12 minute. Eased off the pace and he left me for almost 50 metres behind. I just walked at a comfortable pace and at times stepped up the pace to catch up with him. I overtook Yu Song after 31 minutes. I completed the race in 58mins 58 secs.

That was my best ever timing in the Penang Starwalk, having finishing empty handed last year with the time of 1 hour 10 mins. The timing also clear my conscience in 2004 where I clocked 1hr 02mins 04secs and was disqualified. I was very sore with the official who claimed that I ran. I did not even float, let alone run! He was a young official and I am sure many competitors were victimized by him!

What I am trying to share here is that everyone can enjoy a race and be ‘successful’ if success is measured by one’s own ability and preparation. I may have finished 2001 PJ Half Marathon in 1hr 38mins but I also have completed 2006 Seremban Half Marathon in 2hrs 35mins. Both are a success to me in different ways. It will be futile to compare with others because they are of different levels.

2008 - Happy New Year!

Selamat Tahun Baru semua not to forget, next week muslim will celebrate a new year too - 1429 Hijrah. Yes! it's Kedah's public holiday.

Along the 2007 i had log 131 race events in this blog including cycling, duathlon, triathlon and biathlon. Some of them an annual event. If you planning to participate this year, maybe you could marked the date or week. I summarize and put in text file (url) below Forms & Events section.

So far in 2007, i ran 14 race events. Quite a few compare to 2006. Sudah tua kot.. kaki pon dah kaput. Between 14 race events, 2 half marathon, 2 bike racing, 2 team relay event and the rest were run races.

Out of 14, i managed to get 11 medals. The most memorable events were..
- 160km Century Ride: The longest distance i ever rode.
- 10km SportGames: Felt ran as an elite runner and escort by police traffic big bike but kena sayur a few metre and lost first position.
- Powerman: The hardest race event in 2007 and i did my personal best.

The best events that i participated (highly recommend to register)
- Larian Bendang: A scenic view running route thru kampung and paddy field and 2 day of expo.
- Powerman: The only duathlon event in Malaysia.
- KRI Road Race: Everybody runners will agree this is a 5 stars running event in Ipoh.

The worst event... i think there is no such as worst event. We are runners we love running. Short or extra km..is fine to us. The only is bad organizing of event. They overlook on necessity of running event.

2008 - A new year, a new dream and new target.
What is your target this year?
It does matter half, marathon, duathlon, triathlon, climbathon, start running or walking. It is between you and yourself.

If your boss could set targets for you, why not set an achievable target for yourself - And go score it.. Goal?! You are the winners of the year.
