Report: 24th Malaysian Open Masters Athletics Championships

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 19 - 20 June 2010
Venue: National Sports Stadium Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur

2nd Day: 20 June 2010 (Sunday)

Time : 4.00 p.m.
Event : 5 000 metres
Category : M40-44

There were only four competitors in my category. I only hope to do slightly below 24 minutes so that I would not be overlapped too many rounds by the winner. Never mind being last in my category but not last over all because there were a few much senior runners there.

I must admit that they put me to shame. Many of the participants who are much older than me run at such fast pace. I doubt if I could match them even if I were to be fitter. I used to complete PJ Half Marathon in around 1:45:00. That was many years ago. Even at that level of fitness, I would still be left biting the dust by them.

Some officials cynically told me that I could have run 25 laps when I was finishing. Not too professional, I guess. They had made me walked 5400 metres when the race was 5000 metres the day before. They owed me an apology instead of being cynical. I would have loved to do a 25 lap run if there was one.

I don't mind even if it was a 52 1/2 lap if they were willing to wait for 3 hours! I would recommend the ones involved in the blunder to get back to the basic - go to primary school and master basic counting only up to number 13. To get the time difference of each lap, they need to be in the second phase of the primary school. Return to the track and they would definitely become a better lap recorder.

How I fared in the 5 000 metres race

Generally, I am happy with my performance although it was a bit out of my target. I should be able to do 1:50 per lap to go under 24:00. I managed to avoid being last and in the process I got the last podium finish. As this is my first track race for 5 000 metres I am looking forward to do better although I may end up empty handed.

Report: 24th Malaysian Open Masters Athletics Championships

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 19 - 20 June 2010
Venue: National Sports Stadium Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur

1st Day: 19 June 2010 (Saturday)
Event: 5 000 walk
Category: M40-44

I was quite confident of doing 'well' in this event. My fitness level was not really up to the mark, but should give me enough energy to challenge for a podium finish.

I was happy with my preparations. The weather was fine and I managed to train daily. By Thursday, I was sure that I would be able to do about 29 minutes for the 5 000 m walk and 25 minutes for the 5 000 race - albeit I would certainly be left behind by 4-5 laps by the winner.

13 June (Sun) - NST-MPSJ 10km Run - 53:34
14 June (Mon) - 6.3km walk - 37:43
15 June (Tue) - 6.3km run - 31:27
16 June (Wed) – 2,500 swim - <1:15:00 & 6.3km walk - 36:23
17 June (Thu) - 6.3km run - 30:35 & 2,500 swim - <1:15:00
18 June (Fri) - 6.3 km walk - 36:27

It was an unfortunate morning for me as the lap recorder made a blunder! I walked an extra lap and was told to go for another lap! That's crazy. I reckoned that the lap recorder did not jot down my timing for each lap. If he had done that, there will and should not be a mistake.

I must admit that I have very little confidence with the officials in the 5 000 metres walk. If they get the lap correct, the timing would be way off. Like wise, when the time (final time) is correct, the lap number is not accurate. Well, will compete again and complain again. I don't see there will be any improvement in future unless they break the number of walkers. Too many walkers and too few officials.

After the prize giving ceremony I looked at the official result - my time was 33:04:xx. Unbelievable....... I was ahead of Raie and his time was 32:xx:xx in his M50-54 category. The time showed he was faster than me, but then I had overtaken him on lap 7 (If I have not mistaken) and he had never overtaken me from that lap onwards.

Only great officials' minds can work that out. Luckily I did not go for another lap..... if I conked out that I would be considered DNF! If I were to be on duty, I would want to find out about the participant when he/she did not appear when he/she had been consistent in his/her timing.

How I fare in the 5 000 m walk race

142:1633:04 - 5 400 metres

The winner of my category was just too good. Mr. Peter Beck from Singapore Masters Athletics. He completed in 27:xx:xx . I was 1 lap behind him. Logically, I should be 2 laps behind him since the time difference was more than 5 minutes. His pace was about 2:15. Another great walker, Mr. Suresh was also 1 lap ahead of me. He overtook me on lap 11; he was going to complete his 12th lap!

Looking forward for another blundering officiating tomorrow as I will be many more laps behind.

Report: New Straits Times MPSJ Carnival & 10km Run

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 13 June 2010 (Sunday)
Time: 7.30 a.m.
Category: A - men open
Distance : 10km

Picture courtesy of The New Straits Times

This event was supposed to be held earlier but was postponed due to the Hulu Selangor by election.

I think I was slightly more prepared for this race compared to last week.

Wednedsay: 2000 swim
Thurdsay: 2400 swim
Friday : 6.3km run & walk
Saturday : 6.3km run & walk in 33:03.7

After a week of holidays, I felt more relaxed but fitness was still a big issue. I still had the speed but unable to sustain the pace. I walked just after 20 minutes of running. However, my target was still to complete the race in less than an hour.

It was quite disappointing having to stop several times. I took mineral water at check point 4 and 7 and was hoping to get some water after check point 8. Unfortunately, check point 8 was the last water station. Ambank was too generous with water.

I completed the race in 53:35. I am looking forward to improve my fitness although time is running out. Perhaps, getting more rest will do the trick.

Report: Ipoh Starwalk 2010

By Aiman Cheah

Venue: Stadium Indera Mulia, Ipoh, Perak
Date: 6 June 2010 (Sunday)
Time: 7.00a.m.

Mr Lim Thean Seng (C2049) was among the front walkers to break from the group
Picture courtesy of the Star/Star online

I supposed to be more prepared for this event, unfortunately the weather was not on my side......it rained whenever I needed to do my work out.

I was a little disappointed with Merloon Hotel. Can't blame them because occupancy is always 100% for Ipoh Starwalk. There is no point of booking rooms because they won't reserve the rooms that you want. Anyway, it is still good for walk-in guests. I hope I don't have to stay there any more in future. This should be the last time staying there. The place is no longer convenient because the event has been moved from Dataran Ipoh to Indera Mulia Stadium.

Coming back to the walkathon, I did quite well considering the way I prepared for the walk. Unbelievable. The only training or rather straining I had was a day before the walk. No chance to train at all because the weather followed my schedule! I did 1:07:14 for 10.5km. That was very good and I was confident of clocking a slightly better time in the event the following day.

There was a little bit of miscommunication with Mr Naidu early morning. All the Starwalk participants left the hotel as early as 5.45a.m. Mr Naidu was supposed to go to the stadium with me but unfortunately, he went back to his room. I told him, I would would meet him in 5 minute's time when he gave me a call.

I took more than 5 minutes to get prepared. When I took my van it was close to 6 a.m. I just went one round in front of the hotel and there was no one to be seen. At 6.00 sharp I decided to leave thinking that Mr Naidu had left.

I reached the stadium before a quarter past six. Still ample time since reporting closed at 6.45 a.m. I did not feel so bad when I met Naidu at the stadium and he told me I had actually left him ... he got a lift from a fellow participant.

There were not too many people in the competition catergory this year. Any way, I was too slow to move to the starting line, only managed to be on the 10th row from the grid. I would prefer to be a little in front.

Fortunately, I was not blocked. In fact my start was just too good. I was in front of many established walkers during the first few minutes. However, that did not last long because of my fitness level. I was struggling after about 20 minutes. I drank water at the water station.

Luckily, I felt better and began to catch up with other walkers. I was aiming to overtake Yu Song's daughter. I had lost to her last year - never mind in different category. I caught up with her after about 55 minutes. I was struggling to maintain my pace. I had to ask for water from the St John/Red Crescent on duty twice after the water station.

I went all out in the last 100 metres to overtake one participant in my category. If he had walked faster, I would have given up. Luckily for him, both of us were out of medal contention. I was 13th. It was a fat chance to get a medal.

When the results were released, I was promoted to 12th with a time of 1:08:47. The time would still stand at 12th in the Men Category. I was some 3 minutes faster than last year but 4 minutes slower than in 2007 and 2008. I hope medal draught does not continue next year.

At present, it will be a Herculean task for me to give a strong fight to my competitors in the coming Malaysian Masters Open in a fortnight. Lim Kok Cheong was 8 minutes ahead of me (1st in my category) and K. Jayapal (4th in my category) was 6 minutes ahead of me. I hope to at least maintain my fitness level to enable me to fight for the last podium finish.

Report: Kordel's Charity Walk for Arthritis 2010

By Aiman Cheah

Date: 30 May 20010 (Sunday)
Time: 7.00 a.m.
Venue: Taman Bandaran, Kelana Jaya
Entry Fees (I would rather term it as donation):RM20 per person
Distance: 4.9km

This is one of my favourite events. I had some problems to assemble my team. I invited my FTAAA friend, En. Raiei and he agreed to join my team. His son and neighbour would be in my team. Unfortunately, he was a little too slow to sms me the details required.

When I went for "Larian Kubur", I was invited to join another team. I thought it would solve my problem, getting team members, doing registration and collecting the race pack. I happily paid RM20 and gave my details. A week later, one member pulled out and later the team leader followed suit.

It was back to square one. I then asked Mr Lee Hai Chin if he would want to join my team. He agreed and certainly his would would be happy to join me too. As the closing date was nearer, I asked another FTAAA friend, Mr Lee Choon Foo. He agreed and I was on cloud nine.

I had problem when I wanted to credit RM80 via CIMB atm in Jalan Barat. RM60 was accepted, and RM20 was stucked in the machine and the machine was out of order. I made a report to CIMB branch in Pear Point on 10 May and the bank officer told me they need a few days to investigate. Today is 7 June and I wonder if they really investigated. I had not heard from CIMB. I don't mind the RM60 as it was already in Cambert's account.

My curiosity is what is going to happen to the RM20. It may not be a significant amount. But then, if you have many cases and CIMB keeps quiet, is CIMB not equivalent to a robber.

I was quite prepared for the walk. It supposed to be part of my Ipoh Starwalk preparations. Our team did well to finish 4th. My team had finished 5th last year. Runwitme offered to take photograph for my team at the finishing line. Who would reject such a offer? Thanks runwitme.

This year, there was RM500 cash voucher for Kordel's product which can be purchased there itself. So convenient. The hamper was better than last year too. I guess I have gained more than what I have given. But then, it is still called a charity walkathon. Charity for the Arthritis Foundation and the participants.

After all the problems, my team - 0080 is quite a lucky team. Mr. C.F. Lee won a bottle of 120 vegicap Kordel's Primrose MaxEPA and Mdm H.L Poh won a 3D2N stay for 2 at Holiday Inn, Glenmarie. That leaves me as the only less lucky team member?

Report: Hatyai Marathon 2010

I feel great able to run on the road again with friends who share same passion. Pacing with each other, chatting and capturing the scenic town. The 4th Hatyai Marathon held on 30 May 2010 at Jinakorn Stadium, which located in the heart of Hatyai City. Offered 3 categories; full marathon, 4km fun run and most registered category including me - 13km.

Started at 7:00am Malaysian time, we ran thru Hatyai main road. The 4 lanes road was full with thousand runners as far 500~800meters. Weather was nice. The sunshine was blocked by shop building. I really having a great run on my own pace.

I don't care who sayur me. I don't pressured by my stopwatch. I love stepping my foots on smooth, clean, black, flat Hatyai roads. Steps by steps - my mind was free. All my worries were gone. Running and touring the Hatyai town in early morning was peaceful and enjoyable.

At +5km, we ran against the marathon runners with 4x4 Pick-Up tailing them. As usual the Kenyan still dominant in long distance. I think they also enjoy the running although there were small amount of cash prizes.

The running route

There were 2 water-stations serving plain, cold water, carbonate drinks and watermelons. Running on U-turn route, we passing 2 water-station twice. I took plain+cold water only. Watermelons?.. i save it later at finish line.

My stopwatch shown 34.33mins at 6.5km. Emmm.. I really on fun-pace. After right turn heading back into (<4km to finish line) Hatyai town I feel abit exhausted. It was the longest distance I had ran since Chap Ayam Family run.

The main road start busy. From the 4 lanes during starting, they narrow it to 2 lanes and allow the tuk-tuks and cars passing by. I finished the 2nd half of 13km in 36.09. Total time was 1:10.43.

Between Hatyai Marathon and Hatyai Nature Run, I like Hatyai Marathon most. For the flat and free traffic route. But if you like post-race meals, then this coming Hatyai Nature Run (HNR) on August should consider.

Ya! Alex and I already booked 40 rooms for HNR. It's 3D2N with 1 2 bus.
